Barnetby Silver Band History

Barnetby Silver Band has been in continuous existence for 132 years. The band, which was formed in 1876, is one of the longest established in the country. Several others claim to have a long history but few have continued to exist without a break, particularly through the two World Wars.

Barnetby Silver Band's roots lay in the United Ancient Order of Druids, a society dedicated to helping communities, and promoting harmony within them. At first the band's players appear to have been members of the Druids, but as the band became established non-members began to swell the ranks.

Since those days in 1876 the band has continued to provide music and is proud of its reputation of having one of the friendliest bandrooms in the country and one of the busiest engagement diaries. It is renowned for its concerts, which attract large audiences.

Barnetby is a small, rural village in North Lincolnshire, which has grown up around an important railway junction. Barnetby Silver Band prides itself on the friendly atmosphere, which attracts players from all over the Lincolnshire area. The senior band membership age range is from 11 to over 60 years. It is a family band with several parents playing alongside their children. The band rehearses in its own band room, which has been in use for over 100 years.

Barnetby Silver Band is proud of its continued commitment to young people in the area and many local youngsters have been taught brass instruments in the training group. The training group is for youngsters who have recently started to play a brass instrument, from there the youngsters progress to the Barnetby Junior Band, which currently has many young  players ranging from 7 to 15 years old. Many of our young players have gone on to play with Championship section bands, a few have continued their studies to become music teachers and others have become professional musicians.
